This CD is the only currently available recording of Lassus's Missa Entre vous filles, Missa Susanne un jour, and Infelix ego. The six-voice motet Infelix ego is a particularly extraordinary work. The text was written by the Dominican monk Girolamo Savonarola (1452-98) the night before he was burnt at the stake for heresy. The other great Renaissance setting of this text is by William Byrd, and can be found on Naxos 8.550574.
This recording is also extraordinary in that the opening Kyrie of the Missa Entre vous filles is actually Take 1 from the recording sessions. Even more extraordinarily, a listener from Wales requested to hear this very track on Radio 3 during the short time when Record Review involved requests from listeners. This practice was soon stopped, however, perhaps because the opinions of the listeners didn't always tally with those of the critics.
